Reaction to the face of the teen vaping crisis and vape lung epidemic, the leading e-cigarette maker Juul stopped selling these flavors of vape pod e-cigarettes.
Juul has had a bad year. But that’s what happens when you’re responsible for an exploding teen vaping epidemic.
When you add in the vaping crisis that has killed over 30 people and injured over 1,500, then things go from bad to worse.
Pressure from state and federal legislatures has increased over the last few months. Juul has become the face of all things wrong with vaping. Once thought to be a healthy alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes, vape pens now have more questions than answers. Now there’s a criminal probe of Juul’s practices.
Oddly, cigarette use was waning up until flavored e-cigarette like Juul became popular among teens. Now teenagers are smoking less marijuana, but their vaping has increased dramatically. E-cigarette use skyrocketed 900% among high schoolers from 2011-2015.
Juul Stopped Selling These Flavors
Now the target for of Juul’s practices is their flavored pods. They banned sale of their most kid-friendly flavors in stores. And now they have discontinued the sale of their mango, creme, cucumber and fruit online.
Juul still sells tobacco, mint and menthol flavors. Which has caused some backlash from opponents who think that mint and menthol are still “kid-friendly.”
How Juul responds to this flavor ban will be interesting. Teens don’t seem to be slowing down in their vape use, just yet. But they may not be as interested in “tobacco” as they were “mango.” And while Juul has stopped selling these flavors for now, will they go back to it if the vape pen crisis cause is discovered?
What we do know for sure, is lawyers will continue to sue on behalf of vape pen sufferers. And states will continue to ban vape pens and e-cigarettes. Although the data seems to prove that the vape pen crisis has been caused by black market vape cartridges.
Are e-cigarettes and vape pens less harmful than traditional cigarettes. We won’t know until more research has been done. Until then, only purchase your vape pens from the safest outlets. Or stop vaping altogether.
